Question 1 (i & ii): The issue here relates to the issue of construct validity. It gives negative wash back as well because it will only make students think that they are only tested in the aspect of Grammar and it is the only isolated item which is being tested for English. Question 2: The question is a bit ambiguous, where by the students may be wondering on how to answer the question given. For example, are they suppose to rewrite it as a whole paragraph or number it or etc. Another issue would be the sequence of this dialogue. There will be a confusion for students in order to rearrange which dialogue comes first. Question 3: The instructions given is not that clear. It did not state about what to do with the correct sentences. There is no reliability as there could be more than one answer. Question 4: The issue here relies on the point whether or not the students are going to use all these new vocabulary at the end of the day, i.e. construct validity & wash back. The words or vocabulary used would be a little too difficult for the students to comprehend, therefore this will indeed demotivate them from learning. Question 5: This test is more to a reading test instead of a listening test. (Content Validity). This is because the text is given in the question paper as well. So therefore students tend to read instead of listening to the recording.
Question 6: This test causes an issue of validity (Face Validity). This test does not seem to test on communication competence. Instead, it looks like it is testing on Grammar. Another issue which takes place is the instruction of this test. Where are the students suppose to put the correct answers instead? Behind? In front?
Question 7: The issue here is reliability. The instruction is not that clear as there are no count of words stated.
Question 8: The instruction is not that clear. Students may not understand what is needed to be done.

QUESTION: Give your thoughts on what was significant to you in the assessment used. TQ I have actually posted for this forum but it went missing so I am going to post this again I think that the video is interesting enough to show how performance-based assessment is used in other countries. In my own opinion, I think I learn better by doing and not only by sitting for exams. I also believe that students should be given the opportunity to be assessed based on performance and slightly on standardize test. Pencil and paper types of examinations can be used as a feedback on whether or not the students have learnt something after they have managed to put in action of what they have learnt in class. Even so, standardized exams should not be too heavy for students as well because sometimes or most of the time a piece of paper cannot really get you anywhere and it does not prove that you actually understand what has been taught. 90% of what is written is only based on memorization. It is also true that even if test-takers can do well in exams, they may not be able to face the real world as in the real word it does not come organized with four different answers which is stated in the paper. If we learn something by doing it or by performing it, I am sure we can learn better as we can actually see what we have achieved. Soft skills such as leadership skills and communication skills can also be learnt if we emphasize more on performance-based assessment. So I believe that both of these assessments can be used in a balanced way. |
